About 10 km northwest of Messolonghi is Etoliko. "Little Venice", as also called, is built on an islet between the lagoons of Etoliko and Messolonghi. It is connected to the mainland, on the eastern and western part, with two 300 meters-long stone bridges, ensuring the access for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Katochi is a village of Oiniades municipality in Etoloakarnania. It is located on the banks of Acheloos river, 26 km from the town of Messolongi. It has a population of 3,500 inhabitants. The main part of the village is built on a small hill, with picturesque streets (alleys). Katochi belongs to the municipal unit of Messolonghi. It is a wealthy place with great development, particularly in the agro-pastoral sector, because it is surrounded by a plain, in which all kinds of goods, legume and citrus are produced.
Acheloos, Achelous or Aspropotamos is Greece’s second longest river, after Aliakmonas, crossing a 220 km long route. Its sources are
located in the southern part of the mountain of Pindos and it empties in the Ionian Sea, south of Echinades Islands.
Its delta is populated with over 30.000 animal species, including among others flamingoes, sea eagles, woodcocks, ducks, pelicans, frogs and turtles. Achelous river is a vital ecosystem of both great ecological and aesthetic value and for this reason the river, together with the lagoon of Messolonghi - Eitoliko, is protected by the international RAMSAR Convention.
