The first Siege of Messolonghi, dates back in October 25th, 1822, when Kioutachis and Omer Vryonis tried
to take it. Their first unsuccessful attempt to conquer the city ended two months later, December 31st, after a strong resistance from the residents towards the attacks of the Ottoman Empire which underwent significant losses.
The second siege started on 15th April 1825 by Kioutachis whose army numbered 30,000 men and was later reinforced by another 10,000 men led by Ibrahim. The second one ended on April 10th, 1826, with the heroic Sortie of Messolonghi which was carried out in two phases.
Σπυρίδων Τρικούπης (1788-1873)
Ο πολιτικός και ιστοριογράφος της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης, Σπυρίδων Τρικούπης, γεννήθηκε στο Μεσολόγγι το 1788 και ήταν γιος του Ιωάννη Τρικούπη και της Αλεξάνδρας Παλαμά.
Μαθήτευσε στη Σχολή των Παλαμάδων και έμαθε ιταλικά, αγγλικά και γαλλικά στην Πάτρα, όπου εργάστηκε ως υπάλληλος του αγγλικού προξενείου.
Με προτροπή του λόρδου Guilford σπούδασε φιλολογία και φιλοσοφία στα πανεπιστήμια της Ρώμης και του Παρισιού.
Στις αρχές του 1822 επέστρεψε στην Ελλάδα και εντάχθηκε στο επιτελείο του Μαυροκορδάτου, ενώ από το 1824-1828 εκλεγόταν συνεχώς πληρεξούσιος του Μεσολογγίου.
Από το 1834 διετέλεσε πρεσβευτής της Ελλάδος στο Λονδίνο, ενώ επιστρέφοντας στην Ελλάδα τέθηκε επικεφαλής της συνταγματικής αντιπολίτευσης, έως το 1837, οπότε παραιτήθηκε, ενώ τοποθετήθηκε εκ νέου στη θέση αυτή, όπου και παρέμεινε από το 1841 έως το 1843.
Στη διάρκεια της Αντιβασιλείας διορίσθηκε Πρωθυπουργός και Υπουργός των Εξωτερικών του Βασιλείου της Ελλάδος.
Ο Σπυρίδων Τρικούπης απεβίωσε στην Αθήνα, στις 12 Φεβρουαρίου του 1873, σε ηλικία 85 ετών.
Messolonghi is the capital of the prefecture of Etoloakarnania and is located between the Acheloos and Evinos rivers and has a port on the Gulf of Patras. The enlarged municipality of Messolonghi, incuding the Municipalities of Etoliko and Oiniades, has approximately 40,000 inhabitants. The town is located 250 km NW of Athens and 510 km SW of Thessaloniki. Furthermore, Messolonghi is only 49 km far from Patras and 35 km from Agrinio.
Fish
Especially famous is the sea kitchen area. The lagoon is a source of wealth for Mesologi, providing them with fine fresh fish, which locals cook with great mastery.

The eels, mullets, sea bass and sea breams of Messolonghi, living in the shallow waters of the Lagoon, acquire a particular taste and flavor. When salted, they become even tastier. Gilthead sea breams, mullets and eels are among the most common local salted fish dishes.
Petalia
Petalia are made, during the summertime, of breams, mullets and eels, as follows: First they open them in the middle, cutting the flesh from back to belly and from head to tail. The two parts of the flesh are held together by the belly. They are then salted, left for about 3-4 hours into the salt, washed, having both sides stretched by a sliver of reed to dry in shade. They are conserved between two to three days, the longest, and are eaten undercooked or even raw.
Paste
A region which in fish and salt are in abundance, it could not be particularly widespread and salted. Salted or cured fish are kept in a thick layer of salt. The salting, is one of the oldest methods of preserving and gives special flavor to the product.
The meats are the ideal snack for ouzo and raki. mainly bloat are sown, but also small bream, some species kefaloeidon and eels.
Striped
The sea conceals a variety of scrumptious oysters, with the popular Striped. The Striped is another tasty treasure to taste coming in Missolonghi. Their juicy flesh and their irresistible iodine taste will satisfy even the most demanding.

It is perhaps the most famous sweet cake of Etolia. Of course, we are talking about the traditional rivani or semolina cake, which is an integral part of our festivals and our holidays. For those of you who haven’t tasted it yet, rivani is a highly recommended delicacy. Rivani is a kind of halva, baked, based in only three main ingredients: olive oil, honey and flour.

Avgataraho/Greek Bottarga
Avgotaraho (bottarga) is one of Greece’s most treasured foods. Avgotaraho is produced from mullet caught in Greek lagoons, preferably after mid-August. It has a characteristic spicy flavor that can be attributed to the flora and fauna of the sea lake.
The prime spot for harvesting Greek bottarga is the lagoon of Messolonghi. These hallowed waters are a haven for the famed grey mullet.
This Ionian lagoon presents the optimum conditions for the grey mullet to breed in given that its waters maintain a steady temperature ideal for gestation. Avgotaracho of Messolonghi is one of only 7 foodstuffs in the category of fish, mollusks, and crustaceans to be awarded the EU Protected Designation of Origin label.
It’s a product of high nutritional value, mighty taste and extremely long aftertaste. The more velvety texture it has, the more nutritionally rich it is.
Avgotaraho is Greece’s answer to caviar. Lord Byron spread Messolonghi Bottarga throughout Europe. Indicatively, the price stands at 120-150 euros per kilo, while one can find it on the market in the form of beeswax or trimmings, either traditional or smoked.
Salt
The two salt lakes, Alykes, of Messolonghi that you will meet on the coastal road from Messolonghi towards Etoliko (White) and on your road to Tourlida (Black), are huge square fields of sea water, from where salt will be collected once the water evaporates, and next to them white hills full of salt.
The stunning, in every aspect, Lagoon of Messolonghi, offers another treasure to our city: the salt. The shallow waters combined with a high content of natural elements and the existence of appropriate meteorological conditions, created the productivity of the salt mine, Alykes.
The production of the salt is made within a natural glow plug through a continuous freezing process. In White Alykes the salt is collected by salt harvest machines in contrast to Tourlida where the locals choose to use more traditional ways. The area exploited by Alykes is 14,000 hectares long and the annual salt production exceeds the 130,000 tons. This means that Messolonghi produces more than 90% of primary Salt in Greece.
Afrina / Anthos salt
The Messolonghi lagoon gives, beyond the simple white salt, another great quality and taste, considered the purest of all table salts, the flower of salt or "Afrina".
The climate favors the production of this salt, which is collected by hand from the lagoon surface in the form of fine flakes. Not subject any further chemical or other treatment such as common table salt, and thus a natural product, without additives.
Rich in minerals, stands out for its texture and smooth taste. Ideal to add a spice to your meals, and you can experiment with it and pastry, to give a separate, more spicy flavor to your desserts.

Our first concern is both the choice and collection of the best pomace from varieties of Rio Muscat, Muscat Hamburg and Rhodians. The distillation of tsipouro is a complex process that demands specific knowledge and expertise, experience and modern technological equipment in order to have the optimum result. It takes place in traditional handmade copper stills and then goes through a distillation column (equivalent to approximately sextuple distillation) giving us an extra pure distillate of balanced flavors and taste.
